citizenM Shoreditch, London
An innovative 216-room hotel for citizenM creating a
strikingly urban landmark building for Shoreditch
citizenM Shoreditch is part of the first phase of an urban masterplan to regenerate a significant 1.2 acre site in the South Shoreditch Conservation Area. EllisMiller obtained full planning consent for the masterplan and worked with closely with dutch architects Concrete, to realise the building. The overall aesthetic of the 216-room hotel reflects the citizenM brand, whilst visually celebrating the site’s industrial heritage and the unique character of Shoreditch.
The building forms a continuous two-storey ‘plinth’ which is a simple interpretation of a former railway viaduct, demolished to make way for the East London Line Extension. This steel mega-structure creates large openings for retail and the hotel front-of-house, whilst the first floor is suspended under this structure, resulting in a projecting balcony overlooking the adjacent roofscape.
Hotel rooms are stacked on top of the plinth, making reference to the iconic Village Underground. The key architectural motif of the brick pattern is applied to the upper floor facades to help modulate the hotel rooms and relates to the site’s past use as a brick railway viaduct. Each modular bedroom is prefabricated, highly innovative and combine modern design with user-friendly technology and functional space.
The building is easy to navigate, accessible to all, intelligent and environmentally-friendly, achieving a near BREEAM Outstanding Rating.
